Pack and toss

Poland No Comments »

Pack and toss…  That’s become a bit of a mantra for us.

After we got our paperwork filed for Power of Attorney and DBA today at the town hall where our permanent address will be, we came back to the house and got to work.

Ideally, I was going to work on my Mestek stuff again to get up to 10 or more hours.  But not long after I got back, I got locked out from the database, so I wasn’t able to do any work.  So I went to work, helping organize our remaining belongings by throwing out stuff we packed, but shouldn’t have, and by weighing and repacking suitcases.

Holy crap…  Trying to pack all of your belongings into two bags that can’t be more than 50 pounds each is not easy.  And when your carry-on is limited to 13 pounds, it’s even harder still!

But, after much fussing and shuffling, we were able to get the majority of our bags packed, and two full bins of trash moved out to the car.

We also got our phones cancelled, and tested the Vonage line (works GREAT – for those who don’t know, using Vonage we have a local Massachusetts number, but we can take it with us wherever we go, since it runs over broadband).

All in all it was a pretty productive day, but now that my connection is working again, I’ve got to get back to my work.

Packed up and Moved out

Poland No Comments »

Thus begins our move to Poland.

Well, technically it had already started.  But now it’s REALLY started.

As of Sunday night, our apartment has been emptied, and we are living with Jess’ parents for a few days until our flight.  We still need to sort through our stuff and donate/discard a lot of the extraneous stuff we’ve managed to accumulate over the years.

I can honestly say that it hadn’t quite hit me until this point.  Despite all of the farewell parties and good-byes, it was closing that apartment door that really made it real.

Speaking of good-byes and farewell parties… wow.  I’m just speachless from the amount of support and kind words we’ve received.  I don’t think there’s a single person known to either of us that won’t be missed.  Our lives have been blessed with good friends at every turn, and it’s easy to take for granted.  But I know our good fortune will continue, and if we make new friends half as good as our current friends, they’ll be amazing people.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming adventure, but I’m dreading the travel.  I’m not as afraid of flying as I used to be, but flying tends to make me feel like crap, and we also have a lot of stuff to lug around.  And if the past is any indicator, our luggage won’t arrive with us, so that will most likely be our first adventure.

From what I understand, there will be some folks from ASW (the school Jess will be working for) to meet us when we get off the plane and take us around, show us some important stuff, and give us some settling in money.

Well, I’ve got some things to do, so I will leave you with a satellite image of the school, courtesy of Google.
